IBefore Surgery

Before Surgery.

How do I know if I'm a candidate?

Send photos. Dr. Jones reviews personally and sends back a written assessment within 48 hours — candidate or not, recommended technique, estimated graft count, and a cost range. The full self-assessment framework is on the Am I a Candidate page.

How long does the consultation take?

Photo consultations are reviewed within 48 hours. Zoom consultations are 30 minutes, directly with Dr. Jones — not a coordinator. Both are free. The Zoom is usually scheduled within a week of the photo review.

Should I take finasteride before surgery?

If you're already on finasteride, keep taking it. If you're not, we'll discuss whether starting it before surgery makes sense — it depends on your stage and goals. Surgery doesn't require finasteride; long-term result preservation often does.

What if I'm not a candidate?

You'll be told why and pointed at the right next step — usually medical therapy first with a follow-up review in 12–24 months, sometimes a referral to dermatology or trichology if the cause isn't androgenetic.

IIThe Procedure

The Procedure.

How long does surgery take?

Typically 6–10 hours depending on graft count and technique. FUE is generally longer than FUT for the same graft count because each follicle is extracted individually. You arrive at 8:30am and leave by 5–6pm with a small bandage on the donor area only.

Is it painful?

Local anesthesia eliminates pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure, but not pain. The most uncomfortable part is the initial anesthetic injection — small pinches that fade in seconds. Post-op, mild tightness or tenderness for a few days; standard pain medication is rarely needed beyond day two.

Will I be awake?

Yes. Local anesthesia, not general. You're awake, comfortable, and can watch a film, read, doze, or chat. Lunch is brought in around 1pm.

Who actually performs the surgery?

Dr. Jones leads every case personally — he reviews the consultation, designs the hairline by hand at the start of the day, and is in the room directing the surgery as it happens. A small, trained clinical team carries out extraction and implantation under his direct, in-room supervision at the angles and density he specifies. Not parallel rooms, not unsupervised, not the ‘our team’ abstraction.

IIIRecovery

Recovery.

How long until I'm presentable?

Most patients are presentable in 7–10 days. The recipient area scabs come off in the first week; the donor area looks like a freshly buzzed haircut and grows in normally. You can wear a hat from day one if you'd prefer not to be visible during the early days.

When can I exercise again?

Light activity (walking) on day two. Moderate cardio at one week. Heavy weights and contact sports at two to three weeks. Anything that risks impact or scratch to the recipient area waits four weeks.

What is 'the shed'?

Around weeks 3–6, the transplanted hairs shed. This is normal and expected — the hair shaft falls out, but the follicle is alive and dormant. New hairs emerge around month four. Don't panic at the shed; it's part of the timeline.

When will I see the final result?

Twelve months. Early growth around month four. Density builds steadily through months six to nine. Full mature result at month twelve. Photo follow-ups are scheduled at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.

What does the photo consultation cover?

After you submit photos through the photo-consultation form, Dr. Jones reviews personally and sends back a written assessment within 48 hours — candidacy (yes / no / wait), recommended technique (FUE / FUT / non-surgical), estimated graft count for your case, and a specific quote applicable to your case. The assessment is free and there's no obligation to book.

Do you accept insurance?

Hair restoration for cosmetic indications is not covered by Canadian provincial insurance or most private plans. Insurance occasionally covers reconstruction following burn injury or surgical scarring; we can provide documentation if your case qualifies. See the insurance page for details.

What's included in the procedure?

Your specific case quote includes everything: hairline-design consultation, surgery day, all consumables and post-op supplies, immediate-post-op review, and the full follow-up cadence at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. There are no per-graft surprise charges or add-on fees on the day. The number you're quoted is the number you pay.

What about international patients — what should I expect?

International patients receive the same written assessment and the same single-quoted-figure approach as local patients. The Canadian dollar typically gives US patients meaningful effective savings versus comparable senior-surgeon work in the US, and our partner hotels and travel arrangements are detailed on the Travel to Toronto page.

Where is the clinic?

1495 Cornwall Rd, Suite 31, Oakville, ON L6J 0B2 — operating from Oakville Plastic Surgery, our partner facility. 30 minutes from Pearson Airport, 30 minutes from downtown Toronto. Free parking on-site. See the Oakville flagship page for transit and driving details.

I'm flying in. How long should I stay?

Three nights is standard: arrive day before surgery, surgery day, recovery day, fly home morning of day three. Five nights is recommended for international patients flying eight-plus hours, to allow a buffer day. Full breakdown on the Travel to Toronto page.

Can I do follow-up visits remotely?

Yes. Photo follow-ups at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months can be done by submitting photos through the patient portal — Dr. Jones reviews personally. In-person follow-up is welcome but not required, particularly for out-of-town patients.

Question not answered?

The fastest way to a specific answer is a photo consultation or a free Zoom — both go directly to Dr. Jones, not a coordinator.
